The present situation of Christianity in China

May 11, 2018

Since the time of emperor Robben in the Tang Dynasty (635 years), Christianity has had a history of nearly 1400 years in China. The Protestantism has been developing for more than 200 years since Morrison came to China in 1807. After the reform and opening up, with the implementation of the religious policy and the social and economic development, the Chinese Christianity has not only recovered rapidly, but also has brought in the remarkable development, which has become the common concern of the domestic cultural, ideological, academic and political circles. However, due to various complex and difficult reasons, reform and opening up for more than thirty years, that is, the "contemporary" development of Christianity, because of the lack of comprehensive, objective, in-depth investigation and research, it is difficult to show the integrity of the face of the world.

According to the conclusions of the Renmin University of China's study on the adaptation of religion to socialism, the Chinese Christianity is the five most religious and legal religion, including Buddhism, Taoism and Islam, which is most adaptable to the cause of socialist modernization and the highest modernized religion. The research conclusions on the number of Chinese Christians are different, the most authoritative data from August 11, 2010, the third contemporary China religious forum and the 2010 "the blue book of religion" published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for the first time on the investigation of Christianity, which is also the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of the whole country. The first survey of household survey data shows that the number of Christians in China now accounts for 1.8% of the total population of the country, and the total number is estimated at 23 million 50 thousand. Some scholars estimate that the total number of Christians in China is around 70 million, and some overseas scholars claim that there are more than 100 million Christians in China.
